G’day Mate

We’d like to present to you faithplanter’s debut book, <G’day Mate>. faithplanter is the first Carrot Garden creator in 2017.

It the book, faithplanter tells with candor the story of his trip to Australia on the working holiday visa when he was a 22-year-old young man.

캐롯가든 2017년 첫번째 크리에이터 faithplanter님이 태어나서 처음 만든 책 《G’day Mate》을 소개합니다.

글쓴이의 솔직한 감성이 고스란히 살아있는, 스물두살이 그려낸 호주 워킹 홀리데이 이야기.

It was the fall semester of 2009 when my older sister left for Australia on the Working Holiday visa. I was going to follow her on the same visa at the end of the semester.

I studied English by listening and repeating the conversations in ‘Big Bang Theory’, the then-famous American TV drama, or at other times by doing the exercises in the book <Grammar in Use>. 

2009년 가을학기, 누나는 8월에 호주로 워킹 홀리데이를 떠났고 나는 이번 학기를 마치고 누나를 따라 워킹 홀리데이를 떠나려고 준비중에 있었다.

회화공부를 한답시고 ‘빅뱅이론’이란 미국드라마를 보면서 영어를 따라해 보기도 하고 Grammer in use책을 구입해서 조금씩 풀어 보기도 했다.

It was already in the middle of the semester unawares. We had to make a website for travelers’ lodging as the final project for the web design class.

Our team had the idea of a site for backpackers, and I started to look for materials that might reflect the backpackers’ atmosphere of freedom. It was then that I stumbled upon the drawings by Oh-gisa, a painter and an architect, whose real name was Oh Young-Wook.

어느덧 학기가 중간에 접어들 무렵 웹디자인수업에서 여행자숙소를 위한 홈페이지를 제작하는 과제가 파이널로 주어졌다.

우리 팀에서는 배낭여행자들을 위한 백패커 홈페이지를 만들기로 방향을 잡고 배낭여행자들의 자유로운 느낌을 컨셉으로 담기 위해 여러가지 자료를 찾던 중 그림 그리는 건축가인 오기사(본명 오영욱)라는 분이 여행을 하며 그렸던 그림들을 발견하게 되었다.

He used these freely curved lines to make a drawing. Fascinated by his aesthetics, I ran off to the bookstore at the six-way stop, and bought all of his books. I looked at each of his drawings very carefully, one by one.

The drawings carried in them the aura of the places he was visiting, and beside each drawing was a short line of sentence which described his feelings in that specific moment of the trip.

Consulting Oh-gisa’s drawings I made up the main and subpage of the site, and finally passed the class.

그의 그림들은 자유롭게 휘어진 선들로 그려져 있었고, 그 그림들을 보자마자 ‘이거다’ 싶은 마음에 육거리 서점으로 달려가 오기사의 책들을 모두 사서 그림 하나하나를 유심히 보기 시작했다.

그림들은 오기사가 여행했던 장소의 느낌이 물씬 풍겨 났고, 그림 옆에는 여행을 하며 느꼈던 찰나의 감정과 상황들을 짤막한 문장으로 표현해 놓았다.

오기사의 그림을 참고해 메인 페이지와 서브 페이지 한 컷을 완성했고, 무사히 과제를 마칠 수 있었다.

After the semester I returned back home, and started to wander around visiting coffee shops here and there.

Then I had this picture of me drawing over a cup of coffee in a café, and it gave me a real euphoria. That’s when I decided to record my trip to Australia with my own drawings, writings and photos.

Most of people on the working holiday visa want to make money or to learn English, etc. I acted as if I was one of them outside, but the close friends of mine knew that I had a secret mission in mind that I would publish a book filled with my drawings from the trip to Australia.

학기를 마친 후 집에 돌아와서 카페 이곳저곳을 돌아다니며 커피 한잔을 시켜 놓고 그림을 그리는 풍경이 내 맘 속에 작은 희열로 다가왔고, 나는 맘 속으로 내 호주 이야기를 그림이나 글, 사진으로 기록해야겠다는 생각을 하게 되었다.

대부분 워킹 홀리데이를 가는 사람들의 목적은 돈, 영어, 다양한 경험들인데, 나는 인사치레로는 그런 목적들을 이야기하고 친한 사람들에게만 호주에 가서 그림을 그려서 책을 만드는 게 내 워킹 홀리데이의 목적이라고 이야기했다.

I raised enough money by working part-time in factories for 2 months, and by the withdrawals from my savings account. I packed the working holiday visa, airplane tickets, some miscellaneous stuff, and lastly, two drawing books and two black ‘Pilot Hitec-c 0.3mm’ pens which will hold the special days in Australia.

On the second of April in 2010, for the first time, my body has just crossed the equator and headed for the southern hemisphere.

적금과 두 달 간의 공장 아르바이트로 자금을 마련하고 워홀비자와 여권, 비행기표, 잡동사니들, 그리고 내 일상들을 담을 드로잉노트 두 권과 Pilot Hitec-c 0.3mm 검은색 펜 두개를 사서 가방속에 잘 넣어두었다.

2010년 4월 2일, 내 몸뚱아리는 생애 처음 적도를 지나 남반구로 향했다.
